BIOGRAPHY

 

Hugo Sousa is a Medical Doctor, Clinical Scientist and Researcher

He started his academic career with a BScH in Microbiology (2003) followed by a Master Degree in Oncology (2005), a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2011) and a Medical Degree (2014). Since January 2023 he is developing the Clinical Pathology internship/residence at the Centro Hospitalar Entre Douro e Vouga. 

Previously, worked as a Clinical Scientist for the molecular diagnosis of viral infections at the Virology Service/Clinical Pathology Service of the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (IPO Porto). Between March 2016 and December 2022, he was the coordinator of the HPV Test used in the Cervical Cancer Screening Program in the North Region of Portugal at IPO Porto performing over 100,000 tests/year. 

 

HUGO SOUSA is a Senior Researcher at the Molecular Oncology and Viral Pathology Group at IPO Porto Research Centre, where he was involved in the development of projects focused on viral infections and viral-associated cancers, namely: HPV and Cervical Cancer; EBV and Nasopharyngeal carcinoma; EBV and gastric Carcinoma; and herpesvirus infections in hematopoietic stem cell transplanted patients. He has been responsible for the supervision of more than 20 undergraduate students, 15 Master degree students and 2 PhD Students (completed), and published more than 80 manuscripts.

HUGO SOUSA is Assistant Professor of Pathology at ISAVE – Institututo Superior de Saúde (since 2020); Invited Professor of Virology at the Superior School of Biotechnology (ESB-UCP) for many years (since 2012); and was Assistant Professor of Virology in the Faculty of Farmacy of University of Porto in 2022/23. 

HUGO SOUSA has been involved in the organization of several meetings, including the “30th International Papillomavirus Conference & Clinical and Public Health Workshops” (17-21 September 2015 in Lisbon) and was responsible for the postgraduation course “1st Advanced Course in Clinical and Molecular Virology” (9-20 May 2016 in Porto). 

In 2017 was awarded by the European Society for Clinical Virology with the “2017 Abbot Diagnostic Virology Award” for his work in molecular virology and viral infections in immunocompromised hosts; and recently was awarded with the IDEX SCHOLARSHIP for the “European Master in Molecular Pathology” at Université Côte D’Azur.

HUGO SOUSA is the Coordinator for the Working Group For Early Detection of the National Cancer Hub, a national structure supported by DGS and AICIB for consulting in the CANCER PLAN; and is a member of the European Society of Clinical Virology (ESCV)-network on NGS (ENNGS), aiming at the implementation of NGS in the clinical diagnostic laboratory, for pathogen detection and typing.
